Other Information:

Dates and times
The United Colonies utilizes a time system based upon the orbit of it's capital world, Bastion, and a standard day of 24 hours. It is referred to as the Imperial Calendar or Imperial System and consists of 363 days, which for official dating purposes are unsubdivided, thus days are referred to by their number in the year 1-363. The numbering of years begins from the beginning of the Personal Union and the numbering days also begins on the anniversary of that date. Thus the first day of the 20th year would be denoted as 1.20, there is no zeroth year or negatives years, rather preceding dates are referred to by the previous calendar system. The Imperial System is generally used only for official business requiring a standard time format, record keeping, situations where a local calendar is unavailable or unknown, and in government run facilities. In other cases it is considered most polite for a non-native to learn and use the local calendar though it is not to great an insult to use the Imperial Calendar or the previous system. Generally, when an writer chooses to date something he/she will add the abbreviation IC to note he/she is using the Imperial System or LC (though using the initial of the planet instead of L is not uncommon especially in systems with multiple populated worlds) when he/she is using the local calendar. All government records and documents use the Imperial Calendar and do not have this note.

Measures
The United Colonies utilizes the metric system in almost cases. The only major exception to this is intragalatic scale discussions where light-years are used as the form of length and distance rather then meters which would be quite unwieldy on such a scale. Mass is preferred almost universally to weight due to the difference in gravitational accelerations between planets.

Planets
Considering the considerable amount of only partially explored territory the United Colonies lays claim to, the Administration for Colonization and Exploration (ACE) has found it useful to classify newly discovered planets for cataloging and follow up operation. It has also developed a series of stages of colonial development, both of these systems shall be listed below:

Class I: Small rocky world, <.8 Earth masses, usually to small for life to develop independently or to be worthy of colonization
Class II: Rocky world of >.8 Earth masses, Class II worlds are almost exclusively picked for Colonization
Class III: Gas Giant
Class IV: Ice Giant
Class V: Any planet not falling into the other categories

Addendums: Notes about a planet add like Class I-A, can stack
-A: Planet has significant but non-breathable atmosphere, given for Gas Giants and thus not noted
-B: Planet has a breathable atmosphere
-H: Planet is habitable
-L: Planet possesses a bio-sphere but no sentient life, prime choice for colonization
-Pi: Planet possesses a pre-industrial society
-In: Planet possesses a industrial society
-S: Planet possesses minor space faring society
-Ho: Planet possesses hostile natives, may include particularly dangerous fauna or a hostile civilization
-D: Planet possesses some not otherwise noted danger, generally
-R: Planet is irradiated, usually orbits a pulsar
-M: Significant moon, generally of gas or ice giant
-Mu: Planet is part of a planetary system that has a center of gravity outside of any of the partners
-V: Planet has significant amounts of some valuable resource
-X: Do not approach planet, special exclusion zone
-F: Planet is frozen
-C: Planet is relatively close to its star
-G: Planet has a runaway green house effect

Stage 1: Planet has <10,000 people, early colony or small mining or military operation
Stage 2: Planet has <100,000 people, developing colony or major mining or military operation
Stage 3: Planet has 1,000,000 people, developed colony, population votes on official name and gains preliminary levels of self-governance
Stage 4: Planet has achieved self-sufficiency or 10,000,000, planet can apply for provincial status, planet transferred to direct authority of the UC, ACE no longer involved
