A lesson from yesteryear...

100 years ago a breeder of stud horses died. In his will he left everything he owned to his three sons. His wealth mostly consisted of 17 pedigree stallions all of wich had been proven to sire race horses of quality. In his will he stipulated that one half be given to his older son, one third to the second son and one ninth to the youngest. Immedially an argument broke out, the oldest pointed out that his share came to eight and a half horses. Since he does not want the animals to be sold he reckoned that he should get nine. Not so said the other two, he should get only eight.

As the row continued a friend of the father, and a fellow stud farmer, dropped by to offer his condolences. He listens to the grievances and says "look boys, as it happens I'm taking this prize stallion to market. How about I add this horse to your pa's 17 and make it an even 18". "OK", said the brothers, "Now what?". "Well, a half of 18 is 9" says the friend and gives the oldest son nine horses. "Next up, one third of 18 is 6", continued the friend and gave the second son six horses. "And finally, one ninth of 18 is 2" said the friend and gave the third and youngest son just two horses. All the brothers were happy and none complained when they realised that 9 plus 6 plus 2 equals 17 and the friend left wth the horse he'd arrived with.
